Top 5 Northern Virginia Engagement Locations

So you're engaged!? Congrats!! Now it is time to start planning your engagement announcement. But where to begin?! Once you have your photographer, you should start thinking about locations.

Here are my top 5 engagement locations in Northern Virginia:

1. Old Town Alexandria

Old Town Alexandria is one of my favorite places to shoot! There are a variety of little streets and alley ways that make this the perfect setting for an engagement shoot. If you want more of a beachy vibe, you can go to Oronoco Bay Park for some docks and water. If you want more of the city scape, I recommend starting at Prince and Union and walking up towards the Athenaeum. You can also go to the Wilkes tunnel to get some cool backdrop.

2. Manassas Battlefield

The Manassas Battlefield has some great rolling fields for dramatic sweeping landscapes perfect at sunrise or sunset. The best locations here are the Stone Bridge and the Old Stone House

3. Wineries

Virginia has some amazing wineries that provide the perfect romantic backdrop. I will say that most of these require a photo permit that is around $100. Some of my favorites include Winery at Bull RunBluemont Winery, and Stone Tower Winery

4. Area Parks & Overlooks!

There are some great local parks in Virginia. Great Falls is a great location if you are up for a little adventure. You could watch the planes fly overhead at Gravelly Point or explore Wolf Trap! You can usually find a park close to your home like I did for this session at Holmes Run Stream Valley Park. Some more private parks or estates (like the Oatlands, Meadowlark Botanical Gardens and Morven Park) do have shooting permits so call ahead! The overlook below is Bear's Den! Other overlooks include: Sugarloaf, Raven Rocks, Hawksbill Mountain, Dickey Ridge, Sharp top mountain at peaks of otter near Bedford, Humpback Rocks, Buzzard Rock (Near Front Royal), along the Blue Ridge Parkway and Rocks State Park.

5. Local Farms

Local farms are a stunning shooting location if you are going for a rustic vibe. Some of them even have local produce or florals that bloom at a certain season! Burnside farms, Seven Oaks Lavender Field, 48 Fields, and even Mckee Beshers Wildlife Management Area  all provide great seasonal backdrops for your portraits.  Be sure to call ahead for any permit requirements!
