I will preface this blog post by saying that I rarely shoot family sessions. This year, I have decided to specialize in weddings and engagements because that is what my heart feels the happiest doing. When Cynthia contacted me, I made the exception to capture her family at the monuments because I really feel like I clicked with her even though we had never met in person.

The way she described her desired photos were “slice of life.” This was like music to my ears. The main reason I stay away from family photography is the pressure parents put on their children (and themselves) to get the perfect, picturesque portraits. Cynthia feels that this stage in her kids’ lives is beautiful, even if they cried or had boogers or blinked in a few photos. Because the pressure was so minimal, the entire family had a blast for the short hour we were together. In one or two photos, dad’s tie came undone and she just laughed and said “oh, that doesn’t bother me, it almost seems more natural like the end of a workday.” Dream client!

In family sessions, I also try to make some time for one or two photos of just mom and dad. Usually with little ones, months can pass without a date night. These two glowed in front of the camera as if it were their own little date night. A special thanks goes out to grandma for watching the kids during different portrait combinations!
