Every year I get couples asking me heaps of questions about their engagement session! So, I decided to turn your FAQs into a little blog post! Here are my best tips & tricks for having your best engagement session
1) Hair & Makeup
Yes, you can do this yourself but these are photos you’ll love and cherish forever! Why not treat yourself?
2) Props: Blooms & Bubbly
In general, some couples come with signage or a Mrs. Box for their rings. My favorite props are bouquets and champagne + flutes!
3) Golden Hour Timing
The best time for engagement sessions are at sunrise or sunset. The two hours after sunrise and the two hours before sunset are called “golden hour” for the glowy light in photos. These times depend on the seasons so I can advise you on the exact window. Overcast days are pretty for even light as well! Sunrise is the best idea for crowded places like the National Mall.
4) Leave Early
There is nothing worse than when a couple arrives stressed out due to being late! No one likes to snuggle and smooch after bickering about time management.
5) Plan for Permits
Some of the monuments and national parks require permits. Check with the National Park Service for fees.
6) Seasons & Save the Date Timing
When booking your session, you’ll want ample time before sending out Save the Dates if you plan to use the photos for the announcements. You also may want to consider what look you want for the photos! Spring can mean cherry blossoms but winter can mean snow!
7) Dress to Impress
Feel free to check out my What to Wear post on my blog! You can have up to 2 ensemble changes and many couples go dressy followed by casual. I am a sucker for maxi dresses and suits!
8) Mood is Everything
The best photos are ones with genuine happy emotions. If you want a sunrise session but one of you is not a morning person, perhaps rethink the decision! The same could be said for winter sessions: some guys and gals get can get chilly! Engagement sessions are “up to 2 hours” if one partner prefers less time.
9) Clean the Ring
If you forget, no worries! I can still get stunning images of your bling.
10) RELAX
This is a FUN experience. It is all just practice for your big day. Take a deep breath and let go!
