What is better than a day on a sailboat…. how about a proposal on a sailboat!? George reached out to me to surprise his girlfriend Kate with the ultimate question. Since I couldn’t exactly hide on the boat, I pretended to be an employee of the boat owners to create social media content. During our […]

Surprise Boat Proposal | Annapolis Sailboat Proposal | Kate and George

Today I want to share a less glamorous part of my job: behind the scenes. I have to admit, on wedding day… I WORK. I sweat, I run, I sometimes trip and fall. But I will pretty much go to any lengths to get the perfect images for my couples. Every year, I create a folder of behind the scenes images from my second shooters. This year, I decided to share some of my favorites. While I don’t look my most glamorous on the job, you can see the joy my work brings me in almost every image.

2018 Behind the Scenes | Virginia Wedding Photographer Life | Personal Post

Halfway through this darling engagement session, Brittany and Andrew felt as though they had to confess something to me… They were UNC alumni! In college, there was no feud more powerful than the one between UNC and Duke but weirdly enough, even though I am a Blue Devil through and through, some of my very best friends went to UNC! Now in DC, I actually LOVE running into anyone who shared my North Carolina experiences: He’s Not, TOP) and Franklin Street were all a major part of my college experiences too! So Brittany & Andrew’s “confession was met with laughter and heaps of inside jokes.

Sky and Dallen are two awesome humans that like to have a great time. Sky is actually a wedding photographer herself so I just knew that this day would be super photogenic and perfect for image making! These two met at William and Mary and decided to tie the knot just feet from where they first met. In keeping with campus tradition, they did their first look at the Crim Dell bridge: a spot where lovers can walk across to give them good tidings and a strong bond for life. The rest of the day was just as magical.

Michelle contacted me a few weeks before this session; she and her fiancé Tommy had decided to elope and wanted to get married within the month. Just them, and officiant and me. We planned a time and location but these two just couldn’t wait! In true elopement fashion, they went down to the Fairfax Courthouse and tied the knot before this photo session even took place! They chose Bear’s Den because it represented them: they love the outdoors and are a super adventurous couple that needs no frills or pomp and circumstance of a traditional wedding.

It honestly took me awhile to put my thoughts down about this wedding. I met Lauren and Daniel what seems like forever ago at a beer garden in Virginia. We talked about our mutual love of Pete Holmes, Halloween and running. The way they described their relationship and wedding day vision reminded me so much of me and my own husband. I think I was counting the minutes until this day just like them!

I had the absolute BEST morning with Emily & Nima. The two were a bit nervous at first because they had never had their portraits professionally done but, I must say, they did EXCELLENTLY! I think the champagne helped a bit 😉 We decided to snap sunrise engagement portraits at the Jefferson memorial. This was actually AFTER peak bloom and most of the cherry blossoms had died but we got lucky with one tree and crab apple blooms!

This shoot was inspired by our couple Wynn and SK. The two are planning a full wedding out of country to this was one way of celebrating their love where they first met in Virginia. The two met four years ago at a local bar. Wynn said “SK was wearing an interesting outfit that stood our from everyone else, which I vividly remember… not to mention the hottest guy there. We locked eyes for a brief second, and the rest was history!”

It’s super rare that I accept maternity clients but when a local photography pal of mine reached out to say how darling this couple was, I couldn’t help but say yes! Adleigh & Chace are a photographer’s dream. They trusted any pose that I put them in and had fun with each other! We played around a lot with the potential locations but eventually decided on St. John’s Ruins in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. This gave the two a natural backdrop with the option for a few water inspired snaps at the end.
